Zsolt Richly

honorary associate professor, animation film director

Born in 1941 in Sopron, Zsolt Richly spent his secondary school years at the Berzsenyi Evangelical Lyceum.

Following that he studied at the College of Applied Arts where he graduated in 1966 as a student of the one-time animation class. His diploma film titled In India proved to be a festival success. Upon graduation he started working in Pannonia Film Studio where he worked for 25 years until his retirement.

Zsolt Richly was a defining figure of the international success of Pannónia in the ’70s and ’80s. He played an important role in the development of television series, feature films, TV films and productions for children, many of which have been broadcasted all around the world. Generations of Hungarians watched The Rabbit with Checkered Ears and the Adventures of Fanny the Elephant as a child.

At the same time his ouvre as a graphic designer is highly acclaimed.

Generations of Hungarian animation artists started their careers with the support of Zsolt Richly as their teacher that makes him a defining, epoch-making figure of the animation education at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest.

In recognition of his work as an artist and a teacher, Gábor Kopek, the rector of MOME awarded Zsolt Richly with the honorary associate professor on November 20th 2008.
